About us
Tony Boyce started his apprenticeship with T.H. Barnes & Co Ltd in Blenheim at the age of 16 in 1969. There were a wide variety of projects available, from six storey buildings to fly overs, bridges, flats and alterations. Tony’s weekends were spent working with another builder, constructing new houses. Tony came out of his apprenticeship at the age of 20, becoming a carpenter and joiner by trade and built his own house at the age of 21.
At 25, Tony became a 'labour only' contractor, working with John Lowe, where they built new houses including several cob houses, shearing sheds, airplane hangars, hay barns, deer handling facilities and a variety of other projects.
Tony shifted to Nelson in 1989 with his family, where he worked for himself during the week and farmed on the weekend. Most of his building projects whilst in Nelson were alterations and kitchen joinery, which he has always really enjoyed.
After five years, the Boyce family moved to Winchester, South Canterbury, where the intention was solely to farm, but someone heard Tony was a carpenter and a few months later Tony built his first 40 bail herringbone cowshed for Alvin Reid.
From there, Tony Boyce Builders was formed and the business took off. Over the first few years, a number of rotary and herringbone sheds were built by Tony and his crew - from Ranfurly to Kaikoura on the East Coast and Whataroa to Reefton on the West Coast. Included in some of these projects were a number of workers cottages and owners homes.
Concrete construction projects have become a large part of the business at Tony Boyce Builders, including wedges, feed and silo pads and effluent saucers. Since the business began and even more so in recent years Tony Boyce Builders have constructed many new houses from architecturally designed homes to spec houses built on a budget. Tony has several highly trained craftsmen who solely do high end housing.
Tony became a Registered Master Builder in 2000 and the Ltd was added to the rapidly expanding business in 2002. At present there are 45 employees, including carpenters, apprentices and hammer hands, plus four office staff. All Tony’s staff strive to ensure a high standard of customer satisfaction and take great pride in their work.
